Could California soon divide itself into six separate sates? Voters there will soon get a chance to vote on a measure that would do just that.
Timothy Draper, a billionaire venture capitalist, is behind the movement that would create five additional states. He has contributed $4.9 million to promote the measure so far, according to government records.
Supporters have now gathered 808,000 signatures -- enough to place the question on the ballot for elections in November.
Campaign spokesman "It's important because it will help us create a more responsive, more innovative and more local government, and that ultimately will end up being better for all of Californians."
If the plan is approved by voters, it would create both the richest and the poorest state in the nation. The new territory of Silicon Valley would contain the Bay Area and Monterey. Economically-challenged Central California would encompass Fresno, Bakersfield and Stockton.
