Controversial cable news network CNN could be on the receiving end of an explosive story this week — and it could be the deathblow to the struggling network conservatives have been hoping for.

The mainstream media network has been labeled "very fake news" by President Donald Trump, and has shed viewers at an alarming rate since the election.

Tuesday, conservative investigative journalist James O'Keefe hinted to Fox News' Sean Hannity that he has a bombshell investigation reveal planned for this week, "as soon as Thursday."

According to O'Keefe's interview, he has hundreds of hours of revealing tape from inside a major mainstream media newsroom — presumably CNN — that will shock voters.

The timing couldn't be worse for CNN. The Hill reported late last year that the liberal media's viewer totals — which the networks depend on to sell advertising space — were suffering across the board.

Fox News Channel "is more than tripling CNN and MSNBC in total viewers in primetime, with Fox averaging 2.9 million viewers to CNN's 960,000 and MSNBC's 959,000, according to Nielsen Research. In total day, Fox is beating CNN and MSNBC combined with 1.82 million viewers in the category versus 765,000 for CNN and 559,000 for MSNBC," The Hill reported in December.

It's seems to have gotten worse since then. According to USA Today, after being labeled "fake news" by Trump, CNN saw their viewership drop down a staggering 22% in January compared to September and November of 2016.

These shrinking numbers, combined with the fact that trust of the mainstream media is at an all-time low among Americans according to Gallup, means O'Keefe's reveal could do serious damage.

In January, at a pro-Trump inaugural "Deploraball" attended by The Horn News, O'Keefe warned he was "going after the media next" and told supporters his conservative activist organization, Project Veritas, was "inside their newsrooms."
