Who will take JD Vance's Senate seat?

• https://www.politico.com, By Zach Montellaro

JD Vance has been in the Senate for less than two years, but he's already packing his bags.

Vance will likely continue to serve in the Senate up until close to the inauguration. (Kamala Harris resigned her California Senate seat two days before she assumed the vice presidency.)

Once Vance resigns, Ohio Republican Gov. Mike DeWine — himself a former senator — will get to appoint an interim replacement to take over Vance's seat until a special election can be held in November 2026.

There will then be a regularly scheduled election in November 2028 for a full term.

The qualifications are pretty broad — state law says the governor merely must pick "some suitable person having the necessary qualifications for senator."

DeWine is not a Trumpian die-hard, and he could look to appoint someone modeled more in his understated style of conservatism.

The list of people interested in the role will be long. Some names to consider are the two men who lost to Sen.-elect Bernie Moreno in the GOP primary earlier this year: Matt Dolan, the scion of the family that owns the Cleveland Guardians and a state lawmaker, and Ohio's Secretary of State Frank LaRose.

Former GOP state party Chair Jane Timken, who lost to Vance in the 2022 GOP primary, is another name being floated. And former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has put himself forward as someone who might seek office in his native Ohio.
