Newark Airport News

For the third time in two weeks, an equipment outage caused widespread delays at Newark Airport, but that's not the only problem at EWR. Whether you have an upcoming flight out of Newark or plan to fly anywhere out of the New York / New Jersey area in the future, here's what you need to know about what's going on at Newark Liberty Airport, including:

• Air traffic controllers are losing connection with planes

• Air traffic controllers are walking off the job

• Weather delays

• Runway construction

Two weeks ago, there was a 90-second power outage that resulted in the air traffic controllers in charge of Newark's airspace losing their ability to communicate with pilots. Flights were grounded, and massive delays set in. It's happened twice more since then, most recently on Mother's Day, May 11.

For several days, passengers reported on social media about spending hours waiting for missed, diverted, and cancelled flights, or aboard planes on the tarmac. Why? For a number of reasons, but the big disruption set in last Friday, when Newark's largest carrier, United Airlines, announced that it would cut 35 of its 328 round-trip flights per day beginning that weekend.
