"Making D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force," established by executive order in March, seeks to make Washington, D.C., "safe, beautiful and prosperous by preventing crime, punishing criminals, preserving order, protecting our revered American monuments and promoting beautification and the preservation of our history and heritage." This task force consists of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the U.S. Attorney's Office for D.C.

As part of its mission, the administration has directed the task force to reduce the process of registering firearms and obtaining concealed carry licenses in the capital from up to four months to an average of just 4.6 days. The group has simplified and accelerated the existing procedures. (Related: Federal judge upholds "constitutionality" of Rhode Island's gun permit law.)

For instance, D.C. residents can now book next-day appointments to register their firearms with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and walk-in appointments are newly available and advertised online. To further reduce confusion, appointments for firearm registration and concealed carry permits have been combined into a single streamlined category. Additionally, fingerprinting services will soon expand beyond MPD facilities, thanks to a D.C. City Council vote approving the use of third-party vendors.

"President Trump is not only stopping violent crime in Washington, D.C., he is also streamlining the permitting process for law-abiding residents who want the ability to protect themselves and their families," White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said. "The Making DC Safe and Beautiful Task Force has been working with local officials to eliminate longstanding obstacles and successfully reduced the average permit processing time from several months to just five days."

Looking ahead, the task force is exploring additional changes, such as allowing women to carry concealed firearms in handbags and expanding concealed carry to public transportation. However, these potential policy shifts would require approval from the D.C. City Council.

But despite these federal efforts, D.C.'s stringent firearms regulations remain in place.

According to Brighteon AI's Enoch, the city continues to ban most semi-automatic rifles, high-capacity magazines and assault weapons, while also enforcing rigorous licensing requirements, including mandatory renewals every two years. All firearms must be registered with MPD and ammunition possession is restricted solely to registered guns.
