Ernest Hancock
Hardly a day goes by without seeing the stupidity, meanness,
and uselessness of most US
senators. Far too many of them are very
old and have been there far too long.
Many are very rich. They mostly
seem to have no clue on how to genuinely serve the public interest.
They all appear to be controlled by corporate
and other special interests. When I hear
them speak I think: We could randomly select Americans who could do a better
job than these elected rascals. A
critically needed solution is term limits for senators, say three six year
terms.
Eighteen years is certainly
enough for any competent person to accomplish many things. The reason we see so many very old senators,
in the 70s, 80s and beyond is that they refuse to leave on their own and
collect so much money from their corporate masters that they can keep getting
reelected. Our delusional democracy
suffers from many defects and fixing the US Senate is a core problem that
merits the highest priority.
We need a
constitutional amendment to accomplish this, which Congress, of course, will
never propose. That leaves an Article V
convention as the only constitutional path to proposing an amendment that
surely most Americans would support.

While I can't stand most senators, I just don't agree with term limits. However, I would support a new constitutional amendment... one revoking the 17th amendment.
