Letters to the Editor • Police State
The Other Industrial Complex
Hello Mr. Hancock, and fellow liberty lovers. This is my first letter to the editor. Unfortunatley I am not declaring my independence on this fourth of July. I am sending this letter from the Acute Psychiatric Center of the New Hampshire State hospital where I am being involuntarily detained. I am a former member of the libertarian party and have been a fan of FP.com since Ron Pauls primary campaign.
I wont bore you with the details of how I came to be here. Or how I was dragged from my parents home by half a dozen police officers, some with assault rifles and shotguns. I will say that I have no criminal history and am not being charged for any crimes. I was told I was being brought for evaluation because I had been: "sleeping with a pistol nearby and behaving erraticly." The day after I arrived I was brought to my probably cause hearing, in a courtroom housed inside this hospital. The judge found probable cause for my detention.
I am a gunowner who sometimes sleeps with my pistol nearby. This is a convienent talking point for those who wish to detain me. Less than two days before my abduction I informed my parents that I intended to leave for the south west. My parents have grown concerned about my vagabonding and intiated this force against me. In all fairness I dont think they saw it coming to this. I believe the are under the misguided notion that forcing pharmacuticals and counciling on me would somehow be a good thing.
I have now been here for ten days. I have been participating in groups and speaking with the therapists. I have refused to take medication or undergo standardized testing. On Friday I was informed that I am facing an involuntary commitment. This will allow the state to detain me for an indefinite period of up to five years, based on the idea that I may present a danger to myself or others. I will be tried for my precrime not before a jury of my peers, but a single judge in a courtroom housed inside this very facility.
I hope to make as many people aware of this practice as possible. I am stunned at how easily ones liberties can be taken away for displaying harmless ecentricities. We truly are living in a police state where every individual is subject to the tyranny of the majority.
