Google attack puts spotlight on China's "red" hackers

Is this a future trend? It reads like something out of a William Gibson SF novel. Patriotic hackers battling out perceived or real slights against their government or country on the Internet against hackers in other nations. Mayb they are state sponsored and maybe they are not.
