From a survivalist standpoint bamboo offers a remarkable product.  There are hundreds of varieties including construction bamboo.  These varieties can grow over 30 feet in a year and be 8 inches in diameter.   Additionally the shoots can be eaten.  Readily propagated as long as there is water---too readily in some areas.  Low care requirements.
