The most comprehensive study ever produced of Latin in medieval Britain has been published a century after the project began.

The British Academy has published the final part of its monumental Dictionary of Medieval Latin from British Sources, which contains more than 58,000 entries in nearly 4,000 pages.

The dictionary is based entirely on rigorous original research which has systematically surveyed the massive array of British Latin material that survives from the medieval period, including poetry, sermons, chronicles, scientific texts, legal documents, state records, accounts and letters.

To mark the completion of the work, we have selected 20 Latin words and phrases still used regularly today - all you need to do is identify the direct translation.

So if you think you know your vice versa from your modus operandi, now is your chance to prove it!
