A new software project was announced that hopes to “replace YouTube, Dropbox, Facebook, Spotify, ISPs, and more with decentralised apps”. The team behind the project is using a modified bitcoin protocol that rewards users for “proof of bandwidth” as opposed to Bitcoin’s “proof of work” mining protocol. The team behind the idea is looking for contributors as they work to use mesh networks and open source technology to create a functional alternative to the mainstream world wide web.
