Hofmann had suggested three possible sources of ergot sclerotia which could have been incorporated into the kykeon potion: Claviceps purpurea from either barley (Hordeum vulgare) or darnel (Lolium temulentum), or Claviceps paspali from knotgrass (Paspalum distichum).
