A pair of New York City police officers used an illegal chokehold to bring a man down several days ago. Cell phone video obtained by the New York Daily News shows officer Daniel Pantaleo using a choke hold to bring down a man they suspect was selling untaxed cigarettes. Eric Garner, a 43-year-old asthmatic, died in a hospital an hour later of a heart attack. The father of six can be heard on the tape repeatedly saying that he couldn?t breathe while an officer pressed his face into the sidewalk. 8-year veteran of the NYPD, Daniel Pantaleo has since been stripped of his badge and gun. The second unnamed officer involved has been relegated to desk duty.
The viral video of the event outraged people all across the country. Several preachers and civil rights leaders took turns crying out against the police department at Garner?s funeral.
