UN Biased Against Israel?

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

It's not "biased" enough, an apartheid state, flagrantly breaching the letter and spirit of UN Charter principles and other international laws - a rogue state treating Occupied Palestinians and its Arab citizens as subhumans for not being Jews.

On Sunday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Tel Aviv for talks with Israeli and Palestinian officials, including a stop in Gaza.

The world body provides humanitarian aid to its beleaguered population, helpful but woefully inadequate for two million people, suffocating horrifically under illegal Israeli blockade.

The UN and world community have done nothing to end their suffering, letting Israel enforce open-air prison conditions.

Last March, Guterres disgracefully withdrew a scathingly honest report by Richard Falk and Virginia Tilley on Israel as an apartheid state - a high crime against humanity under international law.

Israel's status is indisputable. Removing the report from UN archives changes nothing. The authors presented clear evidence proving their accusation "beyond a reasonable doubt."

In early August, speaking at a conference on "Israel, Apartheid and Future," Falk said "it is clear that all the major issues international law are strongly on the side of Palestinians, whether it is a matter of the illegal settlement, the blockade of Gaza, the annexation of Jerusalem, the diversion of water, the use of excessive force, very important issue, the right of return of refugees," and many others.

Separately he tweeted: "Israel's newest tourist attraction: family fantasy camps teach how to kill" - young children and adults taught how to kill Arabs.

Despite decades of brutal oppression, including naked aggression at its discretion, nothing has ever been done to hold Israel accountable - the UN and world community largely indifferent to Palestinian suffering.

According to Guterres' spokesman Stephane Dujarric, the purpose of his trip is "to engage directly with Israeli and Palestinian people and their leaders (about) "finding a long overdue peaceful resolution to the conflict."

For over half a century, the UN did nothing to achieve this objective. Guterres serves Western interests, operating like his predecessors.

Conflict resolution is unattainable as long as Washington and Israel reject it. Peace and stability defeat their agenda.

On Sunday, Deputy Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely said "(w)e are seeking a dramatic change in the way the UN treats Israel. It's time to place the issue squarely on the table and address it head-on."

Israel will "no longer tolerate anti-Israel bias," threatening funding cuts to the world body unless it turns a blind eye entirely to Israeli high crimes.

Last December, Security Council members affirmed the illegality of Israeli settlements. Washington's abstention broke tradition.

Since the UN's 1946 founding, it vetoed over 40 Security Council resolutions hostile to Israeli interests. Ahead of his January inauguration, Trump tweeted "things will be different after Jan. 20th."

In response to the resolution's adoption, Israel cut its annual UN payments by $6 million, threatening more cuts if it doesn't get its way.

Expect Guterres to privately coddle Netanyahu, making him complicit in his high crimes.
