Chance for Improved Russia/US Bilateral Relations?

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org - Home - Stephen Lendman)

On Friday, Russia's new ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Antonov, presented his credentials to Trump at the White House.

The meeting was "warm and constructive," he said, adding "I  would like very much to hope" tit for tat measures and countermeasures will end.

"I told (Trump) that we count on improving relations between our two countries…extremely important for international peace and security…We want our relations to be trust-based, respectful, equal and mutually beneficial."

Representing the views of his government, Antonov's expressed hopes are one thing, reality another.

Longstanding irreconcilable bilateral differences remain, worsening, not improving - the Trump administration's seizure of Russian diplomatic facilities in San Francisco, Washington and New York the latest example of US hostility toward Moscow.

Multiple rounds of illegal unilateral US sanctions on Russia is another glaring example of dismal bilateral relations, irreconcilable differences on North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and Venezuela further proof.

The geopolitical agendas of both countries are world's apart. Russia pursues world peace, stability, mutual cooperation among all nations, and multi-world polarity.

America seeks unchallenged global dominance, wars of aggression and color revolutions its favored strategies.

Talks between both countries accomplish nothing. Russia's word is its bond. America breaches all agreements it makes.

Washington tolerates no sovereign independent governments, regime change its objective, wanting them all transformed into US vassal states.

Mutual cooperation with all other nations is polar opposite its geopolitical agenda. Endless wars of aggression in multiple theaters define US foreign policy - dominance, not collaboration and partnership its objective, wanting control over planet earth, its resources and populations.

The threat of eventual US nuclear war on Russia and China is ominously real. America's geopolitical agenda excludes responsible diplomacy, mutual cooperation and efforts toward world peace.

What chance is there for improved Russia/US bilateral relations? None! They're more dismal than any time during the Cold War.

Nothing in prospect suggests positive change is possible - not as long as bipartisan neocons infest Washington.

Trump is a co-opted figurehead president, powerless to improve things. Near unanimous congressional hostility toward Russia holds him hostage to its agenda.

Hopes for better Russia/US relations when Trump entered office were dashed by Washington's longstanding deep-seated hostility toward Moscow - worsening, not improving.
