Things like corn, jerusalem artichokes, sunflowers, and especially hemp could be planted by farmers sitting idle and living off farm subsidies. These plants produce more than enough oil to supply all the plastics, oils, and gasoline that have ever been produced by the oil companies. And they are a natural renewable resource. Just look at what's happened to hemp and farm subsidies to see why this hasn't been done long ago.
