I remember hearing that there were two Soviet "news" agencies - Pravda and Tass.  One of the two names means news, the other name means truth.

The Russians had a saying:

In Tass there is no Pravda and in Pravda there is no Tass.

I don't know what Pravda means - perhaps truth.  The sad thing is that this news too to many woefully under (going on un) educated people here.

The "R" in USSR is interesting.

A republic is a system of government in which the people at large hold supreme power.  For this to have any hope of working in 1791, the framers wrote provisions into the Constitution for the USoA that would allow the civilian militia to outman and outgun the regular army.  This condition was maintained until the Civil War.  Afterwards, a sizable hostile army of occupation operated in the South.

That situation eventually dissipated.

The military was disbanded after WWI, but not after WWII.

Since WWII the military has not been disbanded.

A standing army is present that could be a major inconvenience to the people at large, should it be deployed against them.

I give this snippet of history just to say that a functional de facto republican form of government may already be absent and out of reach here.

Back to that "R" in USSR.  Did the people at large have ANY power there?  I think their primary options were which "news" agency to follow and which brand of vodka to drink.
