Your gesture would have been faithful to Obama's tax policy if your waiter makes more than $250,000/year. If he was making that, it would have been more accurate to give about a third ($1 to the homeless guy (actually, give about 5 cents to the homeless guy, then parcel out the rest to infrastructure, military, interest payments etc) and give $2 to the waiter. If he's making about $20,000, which is more likely for a guy in a t-shirt, the only point you made is that you don't like taxes.
I know how it is to be entranced by the big concepts, but degree and detail are still important.
