 The American people have neither been beaten down nor lost resistance, they simply couldn't care less about anything.  They're apathetic, selfish, complacent and ignorant and for as long as they've got McDonald's, SUVs, Bud Light in a can and sports on their flat-screen TVs, they don't care about anything else!
