In the hours after a team of U.S. Navy SEALs attacked Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Pakistan — and shot the world’s most-wanted man in the head — the Facebook pages for the U.S. Navy, the SEALs, and U.S. Army all saw dramatic spikes in activity, as users flocked online to post their thoughts and comments about the event.

Over the last month, the U.S. Navy SEAL (Sea, Air, Land) & SWCC (Special Warfare Combatant Craft Crewman) Facebook page averaged a half-dozen new posts per day, according to FanGager, a New York startup that helps companies measure and develop brand engagement online.

By midday Monday, there were 623 new posts on the SEAL Facebook page.

New posts are the most important metric by which to measure brand engagement on Facebook, said FanGager’s CEO Eran Gefen, “because it takes more time and effort to actually create content and post it on a Facebook page instead of just liking something or posting a quick comment.” (FanGager crawls Facebook pages once a day, according to the company, so these numbers are sure to rise in the days ahead.)

The U.S. Navy Facebook page averaged about three-dozen new posts per day over the last month. On Monday, there were 595 new posts.

Posts to the U.S. Army Facebook page hovered in the 50-to-100-per-day range last month. On Monday, there were 551 new posts.

Twitter released some stats Monday afternoon about its traffic during the announcement Sunday night by President Barack Obama that U.S. forces had killed Osama bin Laden.

In two separate tweets, the company said:

Last night saw the highest sustained rate of Tweets ever. From 10:45 – 2:20am ET, there was an average of 3,000 Tweets per second.

At 11p.m. ET, there were 5,106 Tweets per second. At 11:45p.m. ET, when Pres. Obama finished his remarks, there were 5,008 TPS.
