The crisis in the Ukraine is leading to an upsurge in violence in the European country. Some people there are taking a different approach to regaining power. Groups are marching and demonstrating peaceably, expressing their objection to the current situation.
On May 15th, pro-Russian separatists, who held key government buildings in the nation's second-largest city, were forced to abandon their posts. In other cities in the east, large groups of protesters have gathered on the streets in calls for independence.
An election held May 25th saw some violence in the country, but peaceful protests continued.
Stephen Zunes is a professor of politics at the University of San Francisco. He is an expert on the situation in the Ukraine, as well as a leading advocate for peaceful demonstrations as a means of change.
