Data Point: U.S. Ranks Behind Latvia in Offering Top-Speed Broadband Connections


Why do Americans' ears perk up when they hear Google is testing a super-fast Internet service. The U.S. ranks behind Latvia, the Netherlands and other countries in offering the greatest adoption of high-speed Internet connections.

According to Akamai's "State of the Internet" report for the first quarter of 2014, 36% of the broadband connections in the U.S. were considered high speed, with requests to Akamai registering at speeds of at least 10 megabits per second. That put the U.S. seventh on the list of countries with the highest penetration of high-speed broadband connections.

South Korea, well known for its super-fast broadband speeds, topped the list at 77%, while ....
