t is possible to pass virtually ice-free through the Northwest Passage in a mere 21 days. This occurrence, combined with versatile, shallow-draught Vikings ships, the Medieval Warm Period, and the relative shortness of the upper Passage (see Map 5c) suggest that the Vikings may well have been able to transit the Passage for perhaps two hundred years or more.
