Known as Memex, the project is being worked on by 17 different contractor teams with the goal of gathering content that is largely missed by the major search engines, as well as cataloging thousands of sites on the Deep Web. The researchers are also interested in using the search engine to more easily locate child predators who may use the Deep Web to target victims.
