Update: Google Denies 'Close Call' for Self-Driving Cars

• http://www.pcmag.com, BY STEPHANIE MLOT

A report this week said that two self-driving cars—one from Google and another from Delphi—almost got into an accident in California. The two companies, however, argue that it was not a near miss but just an example of their respective technologies doing their jobs.

According to Reuters, a Google-operated Lexus and Delphi Automotive-run Audi reportedly met on San Antonio Road in Palo Alto. As the Audi moved to change lanes, the Lexus cut it off. The Audi recovered and there was no collision.

The incident was relayed to Reuters by Delphi global business director John Absmeier during a recent interview. The Audi "took appropriate action" and scrapped its plans to move, Absmeier said.

After news of this "close call" appeared in the Reuters story, however, Delphi said the anecdote was "taken completely out of context."
