Kim Dotcom Wants to Build an Alternate Internet Powered by Blockchains

• http://motherboard.vice.com, by RACHEL PICK

Dotcom is wanted in the US on criminal copyright infringement charges thanks to his file-hosting site Megaupload, which had a successful run until it was shuttered by the US Justice Department in 2012

Now Dotcom wants to move on to his next big idea—an alternative internet free of IP addresses, one that would make it more difficult for servers to get hacked. (MegaNet would instead share data via blockchains, a la bitcoin.)

Calling into the conference from his adopted home of New Zealand, Dotcom wouldn't go into too much detail about the encryption he plans to employ, only saying "We are going to use very long keys, systems that will not be reverse engineered or cracked by any supercomputer."

Dotcom also called for a decentralized internet "from the people, for the people." Someone who has MegaNet on their smartphone would be donating their phone's processing capability and storage when they themselves weren't using it, he said, and Dotcom hopes that with enough subscribers, this would become a formidably large amount of power.
