The rape victim depicted in 'Making a Murderer' has broken her silence

And she has spoken out to say her feelings about Avery today are "complicated."

For those who don't know, Penny Beerntsen was 36 when she was attacked on a beach close to her home in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, in 1985. While it was happening, Beerntsen testified that she studied everything she could about her attacker so she could give a positive identification.

The man she accused was Avery.

Viewers who have already watched "Making a Murderer" will remember the case, which was riddled with problems, from the suspicious police sketch to Manitowoc County police reaching out to the sheriff's department to say that there was another suspect.

Ultimately, after being found guilty of three counts and sentenced to 32 years in prison for sexual assault, attempted murder, and false imprisonment, Avery was exonerated and released in 2003 with help from the Wisconsin Innocence Project and new DNA evidence.
