A Hong Kong protest-themed cake has been disqualified from a British cake decorating competition, igniting a row about 'political censorship'.

The bake, which was entered into this weekend's Cake International competition in Birmingham, featured a figurine of a man in goggles and a hard hat carrying an umbrella, as well as a large Guy Fawkes mask.

The cafe behind the cake claim it was disqualified because of complaints from Chinese competitors, although the organisers insist it was due to one element being 'oversized'.

A spokesman for 3rd Space cafe, which made the cake, told The BBC that it was inspired 'by the streets of Hong Kong'

'The design was simply an expression of what is happening at the moment in Hong Kong.'

The spokesman claimed the cake was withdrawn because of 'complaints from Chinese candidates' who called the cake 'offensive' because it 'promoted the independence of Hong Kong'.
