'High-speed internet service is no longer a luxury—it's a necessity,' the White House said in a fact sheet Monday announcing the program.

The funds come from the bipartisan infrastructure law that Biden is championing around the country. 

The Biden administration announced on Monday that 20 internet companies have agreed to provide discounted service to people with low incomes, a program that could effectively make tens of millions of households eligible for free service through an already existing federal subsidy.

The White House define's 'high speed' as a program 'that offers download speeds of at least 100 Megabits per second everywhere that the provider's infrastructure is capable of it.'

'That's fast enough for a typical family of four to work from home, do schoolwork, browse the web, and stream high-definition shows and movies,' according to the fact sheet.

The Administration 'asked providers to offer such plans with no fees and no data caps,' the White House said.
