CNN reported Tuesday that Trump moved to have Bolton's Secret Service protection terminated.  

'I am disappointed but not surprised that President Trump has made this decision,' Bolton posted to X. 'Notwithstanding my criticisms of President Biden's national-security policies, he nonetheless made the decision to once again extend Secret Service protection to me in 2021.' 

Trump pushed out Bolton, his third national security adviser, in September 2019. 

Bolton published a tell-all book about his time working for Trump in June 2020, ahead of the 2020 presidential election. 

Trump's Justice Department tried to stop publication of the book claiming Bolton needed to wait for the White House to review whether it contained classified information. 

After leaving government service it was revealed that Bolton had been targeted for assassination by Iran.  

'The Justice Department filed criminal charges against an Iranian Revolutionary Guard official in 2022 for attempting to hire a hit man to target me,' Bolton continued. 'That threat remains today, as also demonstrated by the recent arrest of someone trying to arrange for President Trump's own assassination.'

'The American people can judge for themselves which President made the right call,' Bolton added.     

Bolton was also included - despite not signing onto the letter - with the group of 51 former intelligence officials that Trump moved to have their security clearances revoked. 

Asked about his decision to go after Bolton's security clearance Tuesday afternoon, Trump appeared to misunderstand the question and explained why he dismissed Bolton's security detail instead. 

'I think that was enough time. You take a job. You take a job, you want to do a job, we're not going to have security on people for the rest of their lives,' Trump said. 'Why should we?'

He then went into attack mode.

'I thought he was a very dumb person but I used him well. Because every time people saw me come into a meeting with John Bolton standing behind me, they thought that they'd attack them because he was a warmonger,' Trump said.
