Technocracy was a social movement active in the United States and Canada in the 1930s. It was seen as a third option better than partisan politics and communism. The movement proposed replacing politicians with scientists and engineers. Elon Musk's maternal grandfather was Joshua N. Haldeman (1902–1974). Between 1936 and 1941, Haldeman was the leader of a Canadian group known as Technocracy Incorporated. He was arrested and incarcerated for a short time in Canada for his involvement with this group that was considered subversive. After 1941, he joined the Social Credit Party and was openly in favor of Universal Basic Income (UBI). Like his grandfather, Elon Musk is a fervent promoter of technocracy, social credit systems, and UBI.
