Greg Peterson is an unlikely foodie and is a green living and sustainability innovator sharing his passion about how to grow food in our cities. His mission each day is “inspire people to embrace their own greenness,” which he does daily by living what he speaks.
Greg created The Urban Farm, an environmental showcase home in the heart of Phoenix, which he opens periodically for tours and classes. As a resident of Phoenix and urban farmer for over four decades, Greg is well-versed in urban sustainability and food production. The Urban Farm (www.urbanfarm.org) features an entirely edible landscape, including over 85 fruit trees, rainwater and greywater harvesting, three solar applications, and extensive use of reclaimed and recycled building materials. The site is opened periodically throughout the year to the public and offers classes, lectures and tours.
He received his master’s degree in Urban and Environmental Planning (MUEP) in December 2006 from Arizona State University where he now teaches the class called Sustainable Food and Farms. His academic training has been augmented by 34 years of real world self-study, ownership of multiple businesses and a rich background in entrepreneurship, computer training, software development and management.
Greg additionally is on the board of directors for Native Seed/SEARCH, has worked as a teacher of their Seed School and co-developed a 200 hour online Urban Farming Curriculum.
Greg’s latest project is called the Local Food Economy model, which he co-created with Miguel Jardine of VermiSoks. This model frames out the seven areas that need to be in place to create a thriving local food system.
