GAO: Missile Site Costs Likely to Rise
08-14-2009
•
Washington Post
The cost of building and operating the controversial U.S. ballistic
missile sites in Europe could substantially exceed the original
estimate of more than $4 billion, the Government Accountability Office
has told Congress.
The Defense Department's original estimate of $837 million for
constructing the sites in Poland and the Czech Republic "did not fully
account for the cost of power and utilities at the sites, among other
things," the GAO said.

Colonial BancGroup and Pennsylvania thrift shut
08-14-2009
•
www.miamiherald.com
WASHINGTON (AP) - Regulators on Friday shut down Colonial BancGroup
Inc., a big lender in real estate development that marked the biggest
U.S. bank failure this year, and a small bank in Pennsylvania.
The closures boosted to 74 the number of federally insured banks that have failed in 2009.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. was appointed receiver of
Montgomery, Ala.-based Colonial, with about $25 billion in assets, and
Dwelling House Savings and Loan Association, located in Pittsburgh. The
agency approved the sale of Colonial's $20 billion in deposits and
about $22 billion of its assets to BB&T Corp., which is based in
Winston-Salem, N.C. The failed bank's 346 branches in Alabama, Florida,
Georgia, Nevada and Texas will reopen at the normal times starting on
Saturday as offices of BB&T, the FDIC said.

In Afghanistan, Caught Between U.S., Taliban

Washington Post
Afghan villagers, many of whom fled the Marines' advance, say they feel
caught in a tug of war between U.S. forces and the Taliban, and are
fearful of both. The Afghans, primarily illiterate farmers who tend
livestock and crops in the irrigated lands alongside the Helmand River,
often say they simply want to be left in peace.

Refusing to have bag searched in NYC South Ferry subway station
08-14-2009
•
Blog of Bile video
Note they are enforcing a law they don’t know. Searching bags
and refusing people entry “because it says right on the sign.” Also
note that they don’t care if I go to another station.
While talking with the three officers the one to the left and right
of center stared at pins on my bookbag. These includes “Taxation is
Theft”, “This is what an average, responsible gun-owner looks like”, a
Ron Paul 2008 pin, Ron Paul patch, “Don’t Tread On Me: Live Free or
Die” patch, and “I Do Not Consent To Being Searched” and then the 4th
Amendment.

Town hall indeed: Massachusetts and Maine residents bused in to New Hampshire
08-14-2009
•
Blog of Bile video
On Aug 11, 2009, President Obama had a fake "Town Meeting" in
Portsmouth, NH. To make it look like New Hampshire supports Obamacare,
hundreds of people were bused to the event from other states. Free
State Project activists caught them red-handed.

Cross-Examining Forensics - by Radley Balko

•
Reason magazine
The U.S. Supreme Court decided in Melendez-Diaz v. Massachusetts
that the Sixth Amendment's Confrontation Clause requires forensic
experts whose reports are admitted into evidence to be made available
for cross-examination. You might have already thought that you had the
right to challenge a witness who offers powerful evidence of your
guilt. But until six weeks ago, that wasn't the case in many states.

Mom in minivan tasered twice in Salina traffic stop

Blog of Bile video
He said she was speeding. She denied it and got out of the van. He
told her to get back in. She did, then he ordered her back out.
He yanked her out by the arm, knocked her down with two Taser shots
and charged her with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. His
rationale on the disorderly conduct charge: She obstructed traffic when
she got out of the van. The speeding accusation: going 50 mph in a
45-mph zone.

Will Monday bring a run on the banks?
08/14/2009
•
BlueLoriBlogSpot
I am sure by now you have all heard of the "Bank Holiday's" being planned by our foreign embassies. Now comes this very disturbing news (HT The Market Ticker)...
One Of Three Down; Is The FDIC Still Solvent?
Here we go!
Colonial, Alabama’s second-largest bank, is being closed by regulators today, the person said, becoming the largest U.S. bank failure of 2009 after an expansion into Florida saddled the lender with more than $1.7 billion in soured real-estate loans.
The FDIC usually waits until the close of business Friday; they must have had a slight problem with withdrawals......
Left unsaid is what's going to happen to the FDIC deposit insurance fund on this one - my guess is that it will be ugly, as these guys were up to their necks in Florida on development projects that went bad. The "value" of that paper may be very close to zero; if the FDIC avoids doing one of their 40% loss deals I will be quite surprised.
A 40% loss on this one would, if my m

What Should You Have?
08-14-2009
•
Officer.com
Recently my son was home on an extended weekend after a deployment with the Marine Corps and we got into a discussion about what guns we'd like to have in our home armory. The discussion soon evolved to be more about what someone SHOULD have versus what they WANT to have. This bore further examination and, because it's easier to keep track of lists on paper, I soon found myself writing out a list of weapons we felt were necessary. Bear in mind, this isn't a "soldier" list, or a "police" list; in our minds, this is an American Citizen list.
