Study: Dolphins have longest memory of any non-human animal

In a new study being published online in this week’s Proceedings of the Royal Society B, dolphins join elephants and certain monkeys as having some of the longest social memories found in non-human mammals.

Jason Bruck, an animal-behavior research scientist with the University of Chicago, struck upon the idea of studying memory retention in bottle-nosed dolphins after seeing his brother’s border collie after a four year absence. Bruck told the Washington Post that the dog hates all men, yet still recognized Bruck as family even though so much time had passed.
