A Sudanese woman who is eight months pregnant, has been sentenced to execution in Sudan. Meriam Yahia Ibrahim was found guilty of being a Christian in a society where it is illegal to not be Muslim. Judge Abaas Al Khalifa told the woman, "The court has sentenced you to be hanged till you are dead." The condemned woman was raised as a Christian and is married to a man who also follows the religion. The court also ruled that she will be flogged on charges of adultery, since Sudan does not recognize marriages between Christians and Muslims. Amnesty International stated, " According to Meriam, she was raised as an Orthodox Christian, her mother's religion, because her father, a Muslim, was absent during her childhood." The sentence has raised protests, both from international leaders, as well as international human rights organizations. Several experts on Islamic law and culture have expressed doubts the Obama Administration will do much to free the woman.
