Dan Frawley, an engineer from Australia, set up an aquaponics system two years ago in his ground-floor flat in the Greens.

The system uses waste from traditional fish farming as fertiliser for a hydroponic vegetable tank.

After moving to a larger villa in Umm Suqeim, his operation tripled.

"I wanted to move the system," he said. "And the tricky thing is, if you start a new system, you put water in and you're essentially starting form zero again because all the water is conditioned and it's going through the process of nitrification, which is turning ammonia intro nitrogen."

He managed to move the water and conditioned soil as is before setting up a larger system, which now contains three growing beds and 1,000 litres of water for the fish.
