Breakthrough Legislation To Cut Off The NSA Passed And Signed Into Law

Legislation to rebuke the National Security Agency for their unconstitutional spying on Americans has been passed in the state of Michigan. This legislation will cut off material support and compliance from the state to the NSA as long as they are engaged in this illicit behavior.

The legislation was introduced by Republican state Rep. Martin Howrylak. All state officials are now effectively banned from providing "material support or resources, to a federal agency to enable it to collect, or to facilitate in the collection or use of a person's electronic data." This is important because the NSA relies on a great deal of state-level support in order to function.

"If the federal government continues its mass warrantless surveillance programs, it should get no help carrying them out from the State of Michigan," Howrylak said. "My bill will certify that the State of Michigan will not assist the federal government in any data collection unless it is 100 percent consistent with the U.S. Constitution."

The legislation was widely popular in the Michigan state legislature. It passed the Senate by a unanimous 38-0 vote and passed the House by a 108-1 vote. Although Michigan does not have an NSA data center operating in its state lines, the legislation will likely prevent the NSA from moving into that state, and the idea may spread to states with massive spying centers.

"In 2006, the agency maxed out the Baltimore-area power grid, creating the potential, as the Baltimore Sun reported, for a 'virtual shutdown of the agency.' Since then, the NSA aggressively expanded in states like Utah, Texas, Georgia and elsewhere, generally focusing on locations that can provide cheap and plentiful resources like water and power," privacy policy expert Mike Maharrey wrote in a Tenth Amendment Center report.
