The Golan Heights is a strategic location as it abuts Syria, Israel, Jordan and Lebanon. From its snow-capped north, it provides the headwaters of the Jordan River and 20% of Israel's water.  During the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, Syrian forces came close to pushing Israeli forces off Golan, but stopped short, which may have been due to a threat of Israel using nuclear weapons against them, and Syria was defeated. Since 1973, US policy has been to publicly call for Israel to relinquish Golan, while quietly allowing US tax-deductible funds to expand Jewish settlements on the plateau.
