Designer protein helps paralyzed mice walk again in breakthrough study

• arclein

"This is a so-called designer cytokine, which means it doesn't occur like this in nature and has to be produced using genetic engineering," says Dietmar Fischer, an author of the study. In the study, the team tested hIL-6 on mice that had sustained a complete spinal cord crush, resulting in loss of function in both hind legs. They packaged the genetic instructions to produce hIL-6 into a common viral vehicle, and injected these into the sensorimotor cortex of the mice.
