Argentina Court suspends labor decree of Javier Milei

• Jovempan

Argentina's National Labor Appeals Court Argentina issued a precautionary measure suspending part of President Javier Milei's decree, which had been published in December. The measure was requested by the General Workers' Central (CGT), the largest union in the country. The suspension refers to the labor rules included in the Decree of Need and Urgency (DNU) of Milei, which addressed various aspects of economic policy. The changes most questioned by the CGT include the increase in the experience period of new employees, the justification for dismissal in cases of participation in blockages or takeovers of establishments, and changes in the compensatory system of breaks and overtime.

The court's decision represents a temporary victory for the CGT, which called for a general strike for January 24. The DNU, presented on the 21st, establishes more than 300 reforms in various sectors of the economy, including labor laws. Trade unions consider these reforms to be detrimental to workers' rights. Milei's press office has not yet ruled on the court's decision. The government's expectation was that the House of Labor would get rid of the case and hand it over to the courts in administrative litigation, as requested by the Attorney General of the House. However, the decision was different and the labor changes were temporarily suspended.
