Gavin Newsom to Victims of California Fires: 'You Can't Rebuild the Same, Have to Rebuild Wi
• https://needtoknow.news, CNN and NY PostCalifornia Governor Gavin Newsom appeared on CNN on February 6 and was asked if his previous timeline to rebuild in six to nine months would be followed, he essentially said that due to "climate reality" rebuilding would have to be delayed and changed. He said that it would take six to nine months to remove debris! He said, "In the next few years, we want to see hundreds, thousands of homes, rebuilt," however, 16,000 buildings were destroyed, so it appears that his plan for rebuilding does not include allowing many homeowners to restore their property.
He blamed climate change and called for changing zoning and land use. California has some of the most restrictive land use and zoning regulations in the nation, which he says should be a model for the rest of the country.
California Governor Gavin Newsom appeared on CNN on February 6 and was asked if his previous timeline to rebuild in six to nine months would be followed, and he replied, "You can't rebuild the same so we have to rebuild with science, we have to build with climate reality in mind, we have to look at infrastructure, redundancy systems, in egress as it relates to Emergency Management and planning, materials – all of that is being reviewed and reconsidered. And with the latest iterations in terms of understanding and technology. And I say technology in the context of how again we build the infrastructure to keep it safe to address undergrounding of lines, how we address the larger issues of redundancy in terms of systems. But more important than anything else is the need to get the debris removed. 30 days to do hazardous waste? We want to get six to nine months the rest of the debris done. Concurrently people are getting permits. So this all happening, rolling together. And we want to see construction very shortly. In the next few years, we want to see hundreds, thousands of homes, rebuilt.
When asked about California's 'Fair' insurance plan that only has barebones coverage, he said, "we feel strongly at this moment, and again, this changes in real time, uh, that the plan will be able to absorb the losses, ultimately."
He said that there is a new reality that we are living in where droughts and floods happen concurrently (this can happen when there is heavy rain following a fire, so it is not at the same time). He said that if you're not believing science, you have to believe your own eyes. He said that the market and Mother Nature are going to have to change the way we live and do business in the context of how we plan, how we do land use, zoning into the future. Along the lines of your question, we have to wake up to this reality! We cannot be in denial about what's going on with Mother Nature, again around the globe, not just California. He called for more "sophisticated design and planning" without explaining anything.
