Macy's apocalypse: 14 stores in 12 states will close as part of 'bold new chapter'

The retailer announced Thursday that more than a dozen locations in 12 states will be shuttering their doors in 2026.

CEO Tony Spring addressed major changes to the retailer in a letter, stating that the firm planned to close only 'underproductive' locations.

'These targeted changes allow us to focus where it will have the greatest impact – reimagining our best stores, enhancing customer service, expanding our luxury business, and advancing our supply chain capabilities,' he wrote.

Macy's is reportedly providing affected employees with transfer opportunities and severance resources.

'We thank all those colleagues for their dedication and service to the company,' Spring said.

The closures are part of Macy's 'A Bold New Chapter' strategy, which was unveiled in 2024 'to create a more Modern Macy's'.

Along with its 'new chapter,' the company announced it would slowly but surely be closing 150 stores in the US by 2026 to focus on fewer, more streamlined sites.

In 2025, Macy's had already closed 66 stores, according to Coresight, which equated to 10 percent of its 660 locations.

Now 14 more are on the chopping block across beloved malls in California, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Liquidation sales for the newly affected shopping centers are set to begin mid-January and are expected to go on for approximately 10 weeks.

The closing date for each will reportedly be around the third week of March, per Fast Company.
