Mammoth storm leaves bitter cold, destruction

• AP
The mammoth winter storm that began Tuesday left Midwesterners shivering in its frozen footprint and crushed snow-laden buildings in the Northeast.

The 2,000-mile-long system unloaded as much as 2 feet of snow, crippled airports and stranded drivers in downtown Chicago. Much of Texas was under a hard freeze warning Wednesday, and light snowfall continued into the night in Maine.

Utility crews worked to restore power to thousands of homes and businesses in Ohio, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, where freezing rain and ice brought down electrical lines.
