5-4 Supremes: Judges who take bribes should recuse self from briber's case
06-08-2009
•
Wall Street Journal
A divided U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that a West Virginia justice
shouldn't have participated in state court decisions overturning a $50
million judgment against A.T. Massey Coal Co., whose chief executive
had been a major financial supporter of the justice's campaign for
office.

AP
The Supreme Court agreed with the Obama administration [request] and refused to review
Pentagon policy barring gays and lesbians from serving openly in the
military.
The court said it will not hear an
appeal from former Army Capt. James Pietrangelo II, who was dismissed
under the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Wall Street drops as McDonald's weighs
06-08-2009

Reuters
Stocks fell on Monday after McDonald's Corp posted
lighter-than-expected monthly sales and a report that Apple Inc would
price new iPhones "aggressively," signaling that consumer spending may
remain a concern.
With the market in the midst of a three-month rally, investors are
looking for more proof of an improving economy in order to fuel a
continued advance while also becoming wary of the ongoing rise in
interest rates.

Federal Reserve's mortgage program destroying housing
06-08-2009
•
AP
This
and other big government spending programs are turning out to have the
opposite effect. Rates for mortgages and U.S. Treasury debt are now
marching higher as nervous bond investors fret about a resurgence of
inflation.
That's the Catch-22 threatening to make an awful housing market
potentially worse and keep the economy stuck in a funk. Kick-starting
the economy requires higher spending, but rising rates mean fewer
Americans will be able to refinance their home loans. And some
potential buyers will be shut out of the market by higher monthly
payments they won't be able to afford.

The Chinese government has required that personal computer makers

and images," according to a Ministry of Industry and Information

Gender test spurs abortion fears
06-08-2009
•
www.nzherald.co.nz
A new test to reveal the gender of a fetus in early pregnancy has
sparked a row over whether it will lead to sex-selection abortions.
The
American-designed IntelliGender test kit, which can be used from eight
weeks after conception, went on sale in Australia last month. Its
Australian distributor hopes to launch it in New Zealand within a
fortnight.
David Portnoy, managing director of Melbourne-based
Early Image, said yesterday that he was negotiating with health
products companies Douglas Pharmaceuticals and API to supply the kits
to New Zealand pharmacies.
He expected they would sell for about $125.

California contemplates ultimate reform - NO WELFARE
06-08-2009
Could California become the first state in the nation to do away with welfare?
That doomsday scenario is on the table as lawmakers wrestle with a
staggering $24.3 billion budget deficit.
County
welfare directors are "in shock" at the very idea of getting rid of
CalWORKs, which has been widely viewed as one of the most successful
social programs in the state's history, said Bruce Wagstaff, director
of the Department of Human Assistance in Sacramento.
"It's
difficult to come up with the right adjective to react to this,"
Wagstaff said. "It would be devastating to the people we serve."
H.D.
Palmer, a spokesman for the state Department of Finance, said
California is in an unprecedented fiscal situation that has made all
programs, from education to human services, vulnerable to deep and
painful reductions.
"I don't

No one dresses up a dressing-down like Daniel Hannan. He likens Gordon Brown to the "Terminator", always coming back just when you think he's dead, and then sings a Dr. Seuss song instead of quoting Oliver Cromwell.

Obama's Outreach to Muslims: Empty Rhetoric, Same Old Policies
Stephen Lendman
As well as anyone, Edward Said understood the West's long-standing
antipathy to Islam - reflected in Samuel Huntington's "The Clash of
Civilizations" article in the summer 1993 issue of Foreign Affairs and
later a 1996 book.
He wrote that future conflicts won't be "primarily ideological
or primarily economic. The great divisions among humankind and the
dominating source of conflict will be cultural....the principal
conflicts of global politics will occur between nations and groups of
different civilizations. The clash of civilizations will dominate
global politics. The fault lines between civilizations will be the
battle lines of the future" - demagogically suggesting a benevolent,
superior West confronting a belligerent, hostile, inferior Muslim
world. In other words, good v. evil.

Dead Cat Bounce
06-07-2009
•
arclein
What makes me most nervous is that the general behavior of the markets are eerily similar to the 29’ crash and the same time functions are in place. It is only nine months since the actual break took place. In roughly the same time period, in 1930, the markets recovered somewhat and trade also. It really was a dead cat bounce that merely punctuated the ongoing economic decline that rolled on for a full two more years until late in 1932.
