Obama’s first military excursion: ‘Largest Marine offensive since Vietnam’
07-01-2009
•
RawStory.com
One day after U.S. troops officially vacated Iraqi cities, handing
control over security to the Iraqis themselves for the first time since
2003, America’s “other war” has been ramped up significantly.
According to breaking media reports, some 4,000 Marines and 650
Afghan troops are involved in a massive operation, launched early
Thursday morning, to reclaim the Helmand River Valley from Taliban
control.
The BBC News website cites “officers on the ground” who say this is the “largest Marine offensive since Vietnam.”
The Washington Post reports
that U.S. forces descended on Helmand province in helicopters and
armored convoys. The sparsely-populated, arid area lost its government
services after the Taliban evicted government officials and police
officers.
The operation, the Post reports, represents a major tactical change for forces in Afghanistan:

Thursday in the first major operation under President Barack Obama's
strategy to stabilize the country.
The offensive was launched shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday local time
(4:30 p.m. EDT Wednesday, 2030 GMT Wednesday) in Helmand province, a
Taliban stronghold and the world's largest opium poppy-producing area.
The goal is to clear insurgents from the hotly contested region before

Solving the Chalk Mystery
07-2-2009
•
arclein
In 1984, it was revealed that the North Sea oil field Ekofisk, situated 70 metres below sea level, had subsided by 1-2 metres. This was not the first time in history that a reservoir had compacted as a result of oil and gas extraction.
But the scale of the seabed subsidence was unprecedented. The explanation to this phenomenon lay in the specific rock formation in this particular field. The Ekofisk rock reservoir is mainly made of chalk, as is the neighbouring Valhall field

How a Loophole Benefits GE in Bank Rescue
6/29/09
•
Washington Post
General Electric, the world's largest industrial company, has quietly become the biggest beneficiary of one of the government's key rescue programs for banks. At the same time, GE has avoided many of the restrictions facing other financial giants getting help from the government.
The company did not initially qualify for the program, under which the government sought to unfreeze credit markets by guaranteeing debt sold by banking firms. But regulators soon loosened the eligibility requirements, in part because of behind-the-scenes appeals from GE.

Section 526 Dodged
07-02-2009
•
arclein
Section 526 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 had some strong implications for the Canadian oil sands. Section 526 targeted unconventional petroleum sources with greenhouse gas emissions greater than conventional sources. In other words, Section 526 prohibits the government from purchasing fuels with a higher carbon intensity than gasoline.
On June 17, the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee voted for a bill that could put the oil sands back in our good graces. One amendment passed by a voice vote stated U.S. refiners would not be in violation of Section 526 by buying crude oil produced from Canadian oil sands.

U.S. mortgage applications fall to 7-month low
07-02-2009
•
Yahoo
NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. mortgage applications plunged to a
seven-month low last week as demand for home refinancing loans tumbled
30 percent, data from an industry group showed on Wednesday.
The
drop does not bode well for the hard-hit U.S. housing market, which has
been showing some signs of stabilization, with sales rising and home
price declines moderating in many regions of the country.
The
Mortgage Bankers Association said its seasonally adjusted index of
mortgage applications, which includes both purchase and refinance
loans, for the week ended June 26 decreased 18.9 percent to 444.8, the
lowest reading since the week ended November 21, 2008.

CEI Files EPA’s Own Suppressed Report, Demands EPA Global Warming Proceeding Be Reopened
6/30/09
•
CEI
The Competitive Enterprise Institute today is demanding that the Environmental Protection Agency allow public comment on an internal global warming report that the agency itself suppressed.
CEI is submitting the report to the EPA and formally requesting that EPA re-open the comment period on its so-called “endangerment proceeding,” so the public can comment on both the report and on EPA’s conduct. EPA’s official comment period ended June 23.
Today’s actions follow CEI’s release of internal EPA emails a week ago that demonstrated the agency cover-up, followed by a draft version of the report released last Thursday. A day later, the author of the report was given permission by the agency to release the final report but only on his own website.

Arianespace launches "largest commercial satellite"
07-01-2009
•
Rueters
CAYENNE, French Guiana, July 1 (Reuters) - An Ariane rocket
has launched from French Guiana on Wednesday the TerreStar-1
satellite, billed by the Arianespace rocket launch company as
"the largest commercial communications satellite ever launched".
TerreStar blasted off from the European Space Agency's (ESA)
launch centre in Kourou, French Guiana on the northeast coast of
South America at 2.52 pm (1752 GMT).
It was released into orbit twenty-six minutes later.
Virginia-based TerreStar Corp TTSR.O plans to provide
hybrid telecommunications to satellite and cellular handsets
about the same size as a conventional smartphone.
The satellite is designed to provide service throughout the
United States and Canada. Analysts estimated the cost of the
satellite, launch and insurance to exceed $500 million.
TerreStar weighed 6.9 metric tonnes (15,200 lb) at lift-off
and was built by U.S. satellite manufacturer Loral Space &a
