Social Security crunch coming fast
08-17-2009
•
MSN Money
Here's a frightening prediction: The public pension system's trust fund could go into the red in the next year, far sooner than expected. Will it get the next huge bailout?
The debate over health care has captured everyone's attention, but it appears the next big government program that needs to be addressed will be Social Security. That's the focus of the July 30 article "The next great bailout: Social Security" by Allan Sloan, Fortune's senior editor at large.
Given that so few people really understand the Ponzi nature of the current Social Security financing scheme -- created in 1983 by a commission chaired by none other than the world's greatest serial blower of bubbles, Alan Greenspan -- I decided to reprise Sloan's article. (The Social Security problem is especially important because it likely will put additional pressure on the dollar and on bonds, and exacerbate the funding crisis down the road.)

Mexico May Get More Anti-Drug Aid

Washington Post
The Obama administration has concluded that Mexico
is working hard to protect human rights while its army and police
battle the drug cartels, paving the way for the release of millions of
dollars in additional federal aid.
The Merida Initiative, a three-year, $1.4 billion assistance program
passed by Congress to help Mexico fight drug trafficking, requires the
State Department to state that the country is taking steps to protect
human rights and to punish polic

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's move appeared to disregard the wishes
of the U.S. government, which has quietly lobbied against the
plebiscite. American officials fear it could lead to the annulment of
an agreement allowing U.S. troops to stay until the end of 2011, and
instead force them out by the start of that year.

Snitching Blog
Snitching Blog
Snitching Blog is devoted to a part of our criminal system that most
people know little or nothing about: criminal informants, or
"snitches."
At any given moment, thousands of informants are in the
system trying to work off their own criminal liability by giving
information to the government. These informants may be in court, in
prison, on the street, or in the workplace.
Police and prosecutors
often rely heavily on information obtained from snitches. This is
especially true in drug enforcement, but also for investigations of
white collar crime, organized crime, and terrorism.
In fact, it is
impossible to fully understand the U.S. legal system without
understanding snitching. Nevertheless, snitching remains shrouded in
secrecy and confusion.

Bloomberg
Armed protesters asserting their
right to bear arms, including a man with a rifle slung over his
shoulder, gathered yesterday near a Phoenix convention hall
where President Barack Obama spoke, a police spokesman said.
The protesters were taking advantage of an Arizona
law that allows people to carry unconcealed guns, Phoenix
Police Department spokesman Andy Hill said. Police made no
arrests.

'Big Wave' Theory Offers Alternative to Dark Energy
08-17-2009
•
Space
According to the new proposition, the universe is not
accelerating, as observations suggest. Instead, an expanding wave flowing
throughout space-time causes distant galaxies to appear to be accelerating away
from us. This big wave, initiated by the
Big Bang that is thought to have sparked the universe, could explain why
objects appear to be farther away from us than they should be according to the
Standard Model of cosmology.

The Week in Charts " Buckle the Heck Up!

Nathan's Economic Edge
No, I’m not being over-dramatic. It is time to buckle the heck up. The resonant disconnect between reality and the pumping that is going on in the media and among supposed “experts” is at an all time historic, never been here before, Economic Mass Psychosis, HIGH.
To Quote John Kenneth Galbraith, “The majority is always wrong.” Right now the majority believe we are exiting the crisis. They are just plain old fashioned WRONG " again.
To prove my point, I’m going to show you the week in charts courtesy of the St. Louis Fed. This week, however, I’m issuing a WARNING.

Update on Sergey Aleynikov Case (UPDATED)
08-17-2009
•
CRIME & FEDERALISM
Today there was a hearing scheduled in United States v. Aleynikov. I haven't seen any reports of today's hearing. The docket sheet for PACER isn't showing any updates. (See update, below.) Bloomberg, however, is reporting:
Aug. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. computer programmer Sergey Aleynikov, who was charged last month with stealing sophisticated trading software, wants his criminal case to be dismissed.
At a hearing in Manhattan federal court on Aug. 10, defense attorney Sabrina Shroff said she will seek to persuade prosecutors to enter into a rare “deferred prosecution” agreement.
A public trial of Aleynikov would expose Goldman Sachs. After receiving too much attention, Goldman Sachs told the United States Attorneys Office to back off. It seems that the same prosecutor who lied in open court is all too willing to do Goldman's bidding.

Crescenzi: China Diversifies Out of Treasuries
08-17-2009
•
CNBC
New data on international capital flows into U.S. financial assets were released Monday indicating that in June China was a net seller of $25.1 billion of U.S. Treasuries. Many will put the sale in the context of China’s $38 billion buying splurge in May, but the better metric is put the net purchases for May and June in the context of its $122 billion accumulation of international reserves during the two months. In other words, China invested very little of its new money in Treasuries in May and June"just over 10%, a sharp contrast to the 60% to 70% figures seen in recent years.
China’s investment in Treasuries in recent months looks even smaller when data for April are included. In April, China accumulated over $55 billion of international reserves, yet it was a net seller of $4.4 billion of Treasuries.

Postal supervisors: Obama swipe “a kick to the chest”
8/17/09
•
Federal Times
The National Association of Postal Supervisors has fired back at President Barack Obama for dragging the U.S. Postal Service further into the health care debate. In an Aug. 14 letter, NAPS President Ted Keating accused Obama of using the Postal Service as a “scapegoat” and unfairly painting it as “an example of inefficiency” during a health care town hall meeting last week. Obama told a crowd in Portsmouth, N.H., Aug. 11 that private health care insurance providers should be able to compete with a government-run public option because “UPS and FedEx are doing just fine. … It’s the Post Office that’s always having problems.”
Keating pointed out that UPS and FedEx revenues are falling faster than Postal Service revenues, and reiterated the overtime, management and work hour reductions the Postal Service has made over the last year:

Life's Building Block Found in Comet
08-17-2009
•
Space
A
fundamental ingredient for life has been discovered in a comet sample,
supporting the idea that such icy objects seeded early Earth with the stuff
needed to whip up living organisms.
New
research firms up past suggestions of glycine, the simplest amino acid used to
make proteins, inside samples from the comet
Wild 2.
"This
is the first time an amino acid has been found in a comet," said lead
researcher Jamie Elsila of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in
Greenbelt, Md. "Our discovery supports the theory that some of life's
ingredients
formed in space and were delivered to Earth long ago by meteorite and
comet
impacts."

Shouldn't The Taxpayers Have a Say Over How Much AIG Pays It's CEO?
08-17-2009
•
The Golden Truth
The new CEO of AIG is going to be paid $7 million per year plus incentives. Clusterstock.com justifies this by saying: "At some point if we're not going to quickly break up AIG, we're going to have to pay someone to run it."
AIG should be liquidated, not enabled
This is a complete cop-out. AIG should have been thrown into chapter 7 liquidation, but it was not in order to accommodate the monetization of AIG's derivatives counter-parties, led by Goldman Sachs. THAT WE ARE AWARE OF, close to $100 billion dollars has been shuffled from the U.S. Treasury, THRU AIG, and into the coffers of the investment banks who stood to lose $10's of billions from an AIG bankruptcy.
So instead of saying "hey man, we need to pay someone really well with Taxpayer money to oversee the transfer of wealth from the Government to Goldman Sachs," we should be asking ourselves why AIG hasn't already been liquidated. AIG will ultimately cost the Taxpayers $100's

Economists Who Invented Cap-And-Trade Say It Won't Work for Global Warming
08-17-2009

I have repeatedly argued that - no wonder what you think about climate change - carbon trading (a type of cap-and-trade scheme) is a scam.
Now, according to the Wall Street Journal, the economists who invented the entire cap-and-trade concept say it probably won't work in regards to climate change.
Whatever you think about global warming, carbon trading is a scam which will only create a new profit-making machine and speculative bubble for Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and the rest of the boys who caused the financial crisis.

Worse Than Herbert Hoover
Washington Blog
When Obama was elected, many compared him to a modern day FDR. See this Time Magazine cover, for example.
On the other hand, financial writer Ed Harrison has called Obama a "black Herbert Hoover".
Who is right?
It is true that Hoover - like Obama - did not force any meaningful change or reform to the banking or financial system. See this, this and this.
It is true that Hoover - like Obama -appointed as his top economic advisers banking insiders.
It is true that Hoover - like Obama - is trying to paper over the crash with happy talk.
But - unlike Hoover - Team Obama has printed tens of trillions of dollars and - instead of giving the money to consumers or the real economy - is throwing the money at the biggest banks.
And - unlike Hoover - Team Obama is massively manipulating the markets in so many ways that it is impossible to keep track.
