It is just me, or is it completely retarded that the "why" behind not having a job figures so prominently into the official statistic? How is a person who is not looking for work in any real sense "not unemployed"?

Also, shouldn't Gallup be able to determine the unemployment rate very accurately merely by conducting a weekly scientific poll for about a zillionth of the cost? I know "Statistician" starts with "Statist" but this is just whacked.
