One Texas Highway May Soon Become America's Autobahn
• http://www.businessinsider.com, Callie Bost
According to a Reuters article, one stretch of San Antonio's Highway 130 could be the first road in America — and the Western Hemisphere — to have an 85 mile-per-hour speed limit.
In fact, only a few roads in Poland have 86 mph (140 kilometers per hour) speed limits, beating Highway 130's proposed limit by 1 mph. Of course, there is also the Autobahn road system in Germany, which has stretches with no limits.
Highway 130 is under construction to relieve traffic on Interstate 35, a heavily congested Texas highway. While the 85 mph speed limit isn't finalized yet, Texas transportation officials are considering the limit.
The Texas Department of Transportation's speed management director, Darren McDaniel, told Reuters that they are taking that speed limit under consideration.
