It’s been 40 years since the last lunar mission. How long to the next one?

Cernan would become the last man to walk on the moon.

Last year I had the opportunity to speak with Cernan about that mission, and what the space program has done since then. Here’s what he had to say about the “honor” of being the last man on the moon.

It’s been almost 40 years since you left the moon. At the time did you think it would be at least that long before humans went back?

No. Early on, when I came back from the moon, I stood on my soapbox and I said, “We’re not only going back to the moon, we’re going to Mars by the turn of the century.” That gave me 27 or 28 years to be proven wrong. I was. For a long time our glass was half empty, until the Constellation program came along.

Walmart does business AS CHEAPLY AS THEY CAN. If it costs more than a nickle to fix, forget it. If you could save a thousand dollars by doing $50 of maintenance, forget it. Why? Because if you start fixing things with the preventative maintenance idea, pretty soon you are fixing all kinds of things that are not broken. Expenses skyrocket.

This is what the shelved moon program is all about. When you skyrocket, expenses skyrocket. And to avoid the skyrocket of expenses, shelve the moon skyrocket.

The only time when the moon will become feasible is when there is truly a financially justifiable end clearly in sight... in sight NOW, not some foggy time in the supposedly near - or distant - future.
