On Thursday the Mexican Senate passed a measure that will implement new taxes on a number of items including junk food and soda. The measure was supported by President Enrique Pena Nieto and includes an 8 percent tax on high-calorie foods and a one peso ( 8 US cents) surcharge per liter of sugary drinks, and increases the maximum income-tax rate for those earning three million pesos ($230,000) or more per year.
